sample for illustration purposes only

The printer zone shall contain:

  • an optional printer (manufacturer) logo. If no logo is available this space shall remain blank.
  • the Printer pop-up menu is the first thing to check in the dialog, so it shall be next to the printer logo at the top of the dialog.
  • the link to the expand the dialog and that controls the transition from level 2 to level 3.

Manufacturer Logo

  • The Logo is to be aligned left, with margin, and vertically aligned centrally with the printer pop-up menu.
  • The height of the printer logo must be no greater than the height of the Printer Zone minus small standard margins above and below.

Printer pop-up menu

the printer pop-up menu shall have 3 sections top to bottom, separated by menu separators:

  1. installed printers that are available;
  2. a limited number of local printers;
  3. printer management commands;

Only installed and available (responding by direct connection or by network) printers shall be displayed. This enables modern working patterns where for instance two dozen printers in six locations can be installed, but this menu only shows the four or so that matter at any location.

Local printers are the printers directly connected to users’ machines or the ones available on the local sub-net, that are not installed. The directly connected printers shall always be displayed in this section (again, apart from the installed ones that are already displayed in the first section of this menu). For the networked machines there shall be certain limits:

  • if less then six (not installed) printers can be found on the local sub-net, then these shall be displayed directly, merged with the directly connected printers, in section two of this menu;
  • if six or more (not installed) printers can be found on the local sub-net, then these shall be displayed in a submenu labelled "Network printers" under the e directly connected printers, in section two of this menu;
  • If more than 24 (not installed) printers can be found on the local sub-net, then the network query shall be halted, the 24 printers first found shall be displayed in the sub-menu, the top item in the menu shall be one labelled "More printers…" (which shall invoke a network printer filtering tool), second in the menu shall be a separator, with below it the printers.

Within each section the printers shall be sorted in alphabetical ascending order according to the sort order of the localisation.

The printer management commands shall be top to bottom:

  1. "Add Printer…"
  2. "Manage printers…"

Both shall invoke the appropriate tool in the appropriate mode.

Link to Expand the Dialog

This is a link-style button which shall:

  • underline on mouse-over
  • have a small arrow when the dialog is in it's level 2 state
  • display a close symbol when the dialog is in it's level 3 state
  • be a very contrasting colour to the highlight-colour background on which it's placed.

The background of the link shall be placed on a highlight-colour background drawn as a quarter of an ellipse. Te ellipse shall have:

  • a horizontal radius of the length of the dialog link + margin to either side
  • a vertical radius to be equal to the height of the printer zone.

Presets Zone

Image:Presetzone.png

sample for illustration purposes only

The Presets Zone shall consist of:

  • A full width bar, and border to all information incoprorated within the preset
  • The presets pop-up list

The Presets Background

This shall be a full-width bar of a strongly contrasting colour and/or tone to the dialog and preview background colours. This highlight colour shall extend to the frame around all the information which is within the setting. The width of the presets border shall not be greater than 7 pixels.

The Presets Pop-up

Stage 1: on mouseover

Image:Preset_mouseover1.png

This shall be in two sections, seperated by a divider.

  • The background colour of the list pop-up is based on the highlight colour - but it's tonal properties nearly reversed.
  • The first section consists of a list of all the settings available
  • The current setting remains highlighted - in the same style as the preset highlight.
  • the font size reduces to a standard font size (typically 13 pt), but vertical spacing of the list is dictated by the height of the preset title.
  • non-selected presets are shown in the typical font colour (here dark blue) used as a contrasting tome to the pop-up colour.
  • The list is in a particular order and remains in that order- the currently selected preset remains in it's place in the list.
    • The number of presets avialble is limited to 18
    • The list is ordered by frequency of use
  • Actions relating to settings including manage... , get settings etc are listed beneath
Stage 2: Selection

Image:Preset_mouseover2.png

Stage 3: New preset selected

Image:Preset_3.png

  • On click:
    • the selected preset will become the pop-up title
    • the pop-up will close.
    • the preview and summary will update according to the new settings
    • no. of copies and collate will not change, but Paper use will update if required.

Review Zone

Image:Reviewzone.png

sample for illustration purposes only

The Zone includes the following UI Elements -

  • the text summary - this shall include information which is not able to be discovered by looking at the preview. This will change according to the parameters which are mapped to the selected printer, details will therefore be included in the corresponding printer cluster, in the printer parameters zone section of the specification.
  • the preview
  • the heads-up display to scroll between pages such as forward, back, first and last.
  • page counter, including a control to navigate to a specific page

The Text Summary

The text summary is made up of information which is not immediately visible from the preview. This can be information such as paper size, media source etc. This will vary from printer to printer. As a design aid, we have included a list of suggested parameters for inclusion in the text summary, within each printer cluster parameter. It must be stated, however, that the lists are to be used as a guide only and the actual text to be included must be decided on a printer per printer basis.

The text itself shall be aligned left with margin to the dialog edge, on the same background as the preview - assumed to be the standard dialog content background. However, as applies the preview itself, this must be a white or light colour.

The Preview

The size of the preview image shall be determined by the amount of space available. This will vary slightly according to combination of operating system and theme.

Generally:

  • The preview area shall be square, so that the the image can be displayed portrait or landscape
  • The preview shall be displayed as large as possible

Page Navigation

Users can navigate to a a desired page view via the scroll arrows or via the page number listing:

  • the arrows used to scroll through the print jobs pages shall be icons which are drawn and shall use the appropriate icon colour of the theme used.
  • there shall be four arrows; previous, first, next, last
  • the arrows shall remain in one place:
    • when the page displayed is landscape the arrows shall be beneath the page
    • when the page displayed in portrait the arrows shall appear to the side of the page. This is in relation to the page, actually the arrows shall not move.
  • the scroll arrows shall never overlap a page which is displayed. Therefore custom sized pages shall be sized accordingly.
  • when there is only one page in the print job no icons shall be visible.
  • when there are 2 pages in the print job all arrows shall be available, and not greyed out.
  • When on the first page or last of a multiple paged print job, the redundant first and last arrows shall be greyed out.
  • see below for a description of navigation via page counter

Cover Sheets

  • When a cover sheet is inserted automatically at the start of every print job, and a user cannot remove it, or configure it, then the cover sheet shall not appear in the print preview or page list
  • When a cover sheet can be added or removed, it shall be shown in the print preview, but it does not have a page number. In this case the page shall be listed as page 0

The Page Counter

  • The Page counter is located below the preview page.
  • It provides the current page in view and the total number of pages commited for printing.
  • The current page is displayed in a text feld, which is editable and can be used to navigate to a desired page view.

Universal Controls Zone

illustrations are samples for illustration purposes only

Image:Universal_controls_zone.png

  • This shall include the control for number of copies
  • a counter showing how many sheets of paper are to be used.
  • The number of copies to be printed is the only control which is outside the umbrella of the preset. This is because it is not changing the nature or qualities of the print to be made, but rather the quantity. In this way users may wish to change the number of prints independently to selecting a preset.
  • The number of sheets used is shown independently. This is so users can clearly and directly see the physical number of sheets of paper they will be using. This will change according to number of copies selected, but also in accordance to the number of pages in the print job. This is in turn, determined by certain controls, for example, print on both sides, or papersize. Changing a parameter which effects the number of pages in the print job will then automatically update the number of pages displayed.
  • In this way number of sheets used = number of copies x number of pages.
  • When more than 1 copy is selected, then an icon indicating collate is shown.

Image:Universal_controls_zone1.png

  • clicking on this icon will open a pop-up enabling a user to chose between collated or decollated printing.
  • this includes 3 levels of description:
    • title (collate or decollate)
    • icon
    • short phrase description

Image:Universal_controls_zone2.png

  • on mouseover complete description highlights
  • on selection the icon appears active, according to the theme and appearance of other controls.

Image:Universal_controls_zone3.png

Localisation

For all languages which read left to right:

  • The entire dialogue will be handed- that means that it will expand to the left
  • Universal controls will therefore also be reversed
  • Therefore the icons in the collate section of the universal controls will also be mirrored - example below (language is here English, for demo purposes only).
