Layout Strategies for Netbooks and Other Small Screens

This dialog design is optimised for screens greater than 800x600. However there may be instances when the available screen area is less, for example netbooks with a screen size of 800x480. In this instances the dialog will reduce in size according to the following strategy.

Due to the lack of available screen space the dialog will not be able to expand further. It therefore requires a method for handling for these situations.

  • When users wish to turn multiple tags, and there is insufficient space to display further parameters a pop-up message will alert users to the fact that they have to turn one tag off in order to turn on another tag
  • If there is insufficient space to show all the parameters contained in one tag a second dialog window containing only tags will pop -up. This will pop-up from the tag itself, so that a users can experience consistenlcy in where they turn tags on and off.

Layout Strategies for When the Dialog Hits the Buffers

Even in larger resolutions, the dialogue may become too large for the available screen space when several tags are selected to be displayed concurrently. In this instance users must deselect, turn off, a tag before they can turn on a new tag.

If there is some screen space available- i.e the dialogue is not expanded to it's limits, but certain tags could not be able to be displayed these tags will not be distinguishable from the other tags because essentially they are still available, rather:

  • clicking on a tag will activate a pop-up which instructs users to turn off a tag before a this tag can be turned on.
  • this pop-up will appear directly under the configuration matrix
  • the pop-up shall have the same background colour as the review zone, and be outlined with the preset zone highlight colour.
  • the alert headline text- "'Insufficient space !" shall be in a warning colour which contrasts with the highlight colour and the background colour. It shall be in a font two points larger than the standard dialog font size. The second line of text shall be the usual dialog body font.
  • the selected tag name shall become the warning colour.
  • this pop-up alert will time out after 3 seconds
  • the selected tag name shall revert to it's usual colour after 3 seconds
  • the dialogue will momentarily expand and contract - bounce- to indicate that it cannot expand further.
